Bad Breath

IF YOUR BREATH SMELLS, YOU COULD HAVE ONE OF THESE ISSUES!

DOES YOUR MOUTH FEEL LESS THAN FRESH?

When practicing good dental hygiene, its most helpful to brush your teeth in the morning and evenings. After brushing in the morning, throughout the day you may notice a growing taste in your mouth and it could be your breath. Bad breath is known as halitosis and is very common, often being a result of hygiene practices, diet, genetics, and more.

As we go through our day, our airways pick up odors from molecules in our environment.  Whether it’s the sweetness of lavender or the stench of rotting vegetation, these microscopic particles reach our noses and, as we breathe, the rush of air moves by our airway and mouth.  Just like the air outside, breath picks up particulates. Diet is a contributor as well by adding odors from food you’ve eaten into your bloodstream. If you eat garlic bread, you should expect to excrete the food’s compounds throughout your pores!  Darkly colored drinks such as tea, coffee, and red wine also can have adverse effects on the freshness of one’s breath. Other causes of bad breath can include oral or respiratory infections, dry mouth, or diabetes. Red or swollen gums, loose teeth, or sores in the mouth are signs of oral infection or more serious issues and could lead to bad breath. If you are ever concerned about your mouth, it’s always good to consult your local dentist!

DON’T FEAR YOUR DENTAL HYGIENE

Not brushing your teeth twice a day or cleaning in between your teeth regularly with an interdental brush, can lead to bad breath. Neglecting the latter allows food particles to build up between your teeth which in turn will encourage bacteria and plaque to form. The tongue can harbor a lot of bacteria, some of which encourage bad breath, so brushing your tongue can be something you should do regularly.

Preventing bad breath can be easier than you think. More regular oral hygiene is a huge step to improving your breath, brushing twice a day make a huge difference. Cleaning your tongue is one of the easiest ways to actively prevent bad breath. Antibacterial mouthwash can help too, the best kind to assist with bad breath is one that contains alcohol. Use caution with mints or gum, the high levels of sugar in these can result in tooth decay over time and can be far more detrimental to your fresh breath in the long run.

BAD BREATH IS A TURN-OFF FOR YOUR DATE!

A survey into attraction reveals bad breath would be a put-off for 85% of British adults looking for a new partner. The findings also show that they almost unanimously wouldn’t go on a second date with someone if they had bad breath on the first. Masking smelly breath with a mint is only a temporary solution to your problem. Chewing sugar-free gum can help as it increases saliva flow, which helps to clean out your mouth and get rid of bacteria that cause bad breath. Testing if our breath smells can be done quickly and easily. Lick your wrist and let it go dry. If the part of your wrist you licked smells bad, then it is likely our breath does too!
